Our Therapists:

Liz Howell, M.Ed, LPC-S

Since 2001, I’ve helped my clients break through the obstacles that seem to be holding them back in life. Life's too short to be unhappy, unsure, or unfulfilled. I am here to help my clients achieve a more positive outlook on life, and provide them with all the tools necessary to get them there. Let me help you learn and develop better ways to handle the issues that are standing in the way of your goals.

Every year, millions of Americans face anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and other mental illnesses without seeking help from a professional. Are you where you want to be in your life? Has it turned out to be what you want it to be? Let’s figure out why together and get you headed in the right direction. You don’t have to face this alone, there is a "we" in wellness for a reason. I can help you identify and address the obstacles that negatively impact your life.

In November 2016, I helped form a non-profit that advocates for those impacted by the disease of addiction. The mission of Not One More Alabama, Inc. is to empower people that have been paralyzed by the stigma of mental illness and addiction. I believe that family involvement is key to long-term recovery so working with patients and their families has been my specialty.

Do you feel like you're reliving the same day over and over again - just like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day? Have you tried to break free and do something different with your life only to fall back into the same ol' routine? Are you and your partner experiencing a discrepancy in desire? Do you experience shame relating to your sexual behaviors? You're not alone, and the good news is you can start making changes to create the life you want - today. Not sure how to do that? That's where I come in.

As a Certified Sex Therapist, I work with individuals and couples that may be experiencing a wide range of sexual difficulties - from desire discrepancy and sexual dysfunctions, to problem sexual behaviors and issues related to Gender, Sexual, and Relationship diversity.

You deserve a positive change in your life and you are capable of making it happen. Let me help you become the person you were meant to be.

If you (or your family) are struggling with grief or trauma, or if you just need support to navigate life's complicated daily challenges, I'm here to help. I will strengthen and empower you so you can navigate your
current crisis. Everyone experiences grief and trauma in their own way, and I will give you the tools to go through the process in a way that is healthy for you and your family. Your journey with therapy will be unique, and we will work together so you receive counseling based on your strengths and goals, and you will learn
to make choices that will help you become more self-sufficient and accountable. I use an eclectic approach to therapy with a strong foundation in CBT and Reality Focused Therapy.

I am passionate about working with the LGBTQQIAA+ population both as a therapist and social justice advocate. I am familiar with WPATH standards of care and the challenges being transgender or gender expansive in your expression. I am a kink aware professional as well as a poly- and ACE-friendly counselor willing and able to work with individuals and/or couples to help promote healthy communication and manage conflict in interpersonal relationships.

I believe that my role as a counselor is characterized by compassion, understanding and validation while challenging individuals to look deep within themselves in order to gain new insight and make changes to their thoughts and behaviors so that they may live healthy, balanced lives. My goal is not to give you advice or tell you what to do but instead to help guide you along the journey to discovering your own answers and developing healthy coping strategies to manage any challenges that come your way.

My goal is to offer a safe space - a judgment-free zone to initiate your healing process. With over 20 years as a therapist, one common theme has been evident: people want to know they are safe to disclose. Safe to know that they will not be judged as less than others or shamed for whatever they are experiencing or may have experienced. For this reason, one of my foremost goals has been to create a safe space. A space that will allow individuals to begin a journey that will enable them to identify, explore and become equipped with the tools that will allow them to experience the life they deserve.

With an integrative approach to treatment, customized to suit your presenting concerns, I will further assist with establishing healthy connections with self and others, identifying, and establishing a unique treatment plan to help with identified purposes. I view my role as a facilitator helping with exploration, identifying, and developing new skills to deal with identified challenges.

My areas of specialization and interest include but are not limited to grief, trauma, PTSD; depression, mood disorders; anxiety; life transitions; death and dying, and relationships. I work within the context of individual, group, and family therapy.

Bob Ross, the famous landscape painter, used to say, “there are no mistakes, just happy accidents.” He felt that if you didn’t like the way a painting was turning out, to get curious about it, and receive the trial as an opportunity for growth as a painter. Likewise, I believe that each life is a canvas, filled with contradictory brush strokes from without and from within. Every one of us is tasked with molding those strokes into the beautiful story arc of our choosing. For some of us, the tension displayed on our unique canvas is too overwhelming to resolve on our own. That’s where I come in.

In therapy we will explore your circumstances as opportunities for creative collaboration. Gathering and processing the disparate traumas, losses, disappointments, and wounds that may emerge, is not a straight path. I am not the expert on what you have experienced. But I am a safe and willing co-conspirator.  We can discover the beauty on the canvas together.

My previous training was in music, specifically church music, so I am well versed in navigating church spaces as both an insider and an outsider. I have extensive training working with couples as well as a level one certification in Brainspotting. I am also passionate about working with ADHD and ASD clients.

“There are no mistakes,” just like Bob Ross said. It’s true about each of us. If we can approach ourselves free of judgement, we can begin to heal from our hurts and make our masterpiece.
